Croatia beach fun, hiking Plitivice Lakes and soaking it all in

September brought us to Croatia.  Here we found our bliss with sand between our toes, Istrian seafood and olive oil.  http://www.bluedanubewine.com/regions/croatia/  This sight has some good info on Croatian wine if you are curious. Imagine, white, crisp freshness accompanied with the most fresh seafood and Italy’s amazing pasta. I thought I died and went to heaven.  And that _IGP9980was just the degustation portion. Then you add to that the beaches, the ocean and the stunning Plitvice Lakes.  This UNESCO sight http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/98  is so eye popping gorgeous.  Every bend in the path leads to another waterfall or crystal clear lake teaming with fishes and ducks and birds.  Croatia was the sort of place you know you would go every year if you could. It recalibrates the mind and body, bringing one back to nature and at the same time spoiling you with abundance!

Berlin by train

IMGP1410We took advantage of our furloughed time and caught a train to Berlin recently.  The ride was awesome. We picnicked, read and watched movies. When in Berlin we were entertained by many walks and scooter rides through the park. We hit all the sights and road with Fat Tire Bike tours.  We even spent a day at the zoo and hit a kitschy antique market just for fun.

Fourth of July fun in Bann

We decided to stay home and keep it casual with burgers on the grill, snacks and BYOB.  So many great folks turned out. What a blast. We should do it more often.  Thanks Miss Stephanie for the bounce house and for co-hosting with me!  You are amazing darling!

Bordeaux, France Wine Tasting with Friends

What a great week. Criswell’s planned a superb wine tasting experience in Bordeaux, France for us all.  The children had a blast with Miss Meghan.  CJ and I cooked up some good grub and we enjoyed some lovely French cooking and delights as usual.  God love France!

We even squeezed in some pool time and a bike ride to round it out.  All in all a fantastic week in a lovely place.

Ireland at Last

It has been WAY too long since I have been back to Ireland.  God I love it. Even when it pisses rain and the wind howls.  The music, the food, the sheep, the green countryside…the ice-cream . HOLY MOLY, that was a new treat.  Murphy’s Ice Cream was not there in ’97 when I was studying communication in Ulster.  Even though the weather did not call for ice-cream we ate it daily once we got ahold of that Dingle Sea Salt and Irish Cream flavor combo.  Seriously it was better than gelato in Rome.  Then you add to that the sheer joy on Gloria and Liam’s faces in seeing Fungi the wild dolphin.  This 30 year old plus wild dolphin made us work for a sighting but it was worth it. We nearly froze our fingers and noses on the rainy, windy boat, but when Fungi came alongside jumping and smiling in a race against our boat, it was all worth it.  What a lovely added bonus to a weekend filled with great sights, tastes and sounds!

Bike rides, local fun and Last days of Space Camp

It has finally felt like summer here, although intermittently I must admit   80 on Sat and iffy on Sunday and cool/rainy today…not sure what this German Summer has in store. We are making the most of it none the less. We have taken two bike rides that were over 20 km each. One was along the river near our home heading toward Waldfishbach and this last weekend we drove the bikes up to Bingen to ride along the scenic Rhine River.  We had a blast both days and Liam has even jumped on the back of the tag along to pedal like a big guy- pretty cool for a 3.5 year old!

One is Never Enough

What is going on?  One oatmeal cookie goes down so easily.  How do we stop ourselves from the pure bliss that comes from oatmeal, pecan, chocolate and a little bitter sweet dried cherry with brown sugar and pure yumminess?  It is really the ultimate question of our lives. How can we get more of what we love?  How can we make those blissful happy times never end?  How can we just hold on to the people we love and the moments that give us the most joy?  How can we only watch one episode of Game of Thrones at a time? I know I am going deep here people.  Perhaps its the rain, that never seems to end here in Germany.  Perhaps its the limbo that we are living, not knowing where we will be living in the next year and not knowing how much to invest here since the plug could be pulled any minute.  Perhaps it is the sleep deprivation of having a three year old who yells out “Mooooomy” at midnight and 2 AM religiously every night, pulling me into the listless existence of a zombie with repeated interrupted REM cycles.  It is hard to say.  I just feel philosophical and a bit sad. It is a big transition time here in Germany.

So, perhaps I am gorging on oatmeal cookies because I just don’t want to think about all these amazing friends who are leaving us behind.  Some of them came back into our lives after years of separation only to become more precious.  They were our “family” abroad.  Some just worked their way into our hearts with their smiles, generosity, and genuine friendship.  Some have already left and more will follow.  They spread the circumference of the globe like dandelion fluff.  Or as a new friend says, like “wishers” as her son blows the white fluff from the dandelion weed.  Why do I let them all in anyway; these people with their radiant smiles, friendly hearts and likeminded zeal for life? I would be better off if I just didn’t do it right?  I remember when Snoopy died, my first pet, a beagle that my mother truly loved.  She said she did not want another dog because the loss was too great and she could  not bear to go through it again.  Perhaps I should just stop opening my heart to all those snoopies out there.  Damn you all for being so cute and sweet and loving me and my husband and my children.  Damn you for inviting us into your hearts and into your lives!  There I said it. I am mad and sad.  This stinks!  PCS season really, really bites!

12 Day Cruise of Europe

Wow, what a whirlwind!  We just returned from a 12 day cruise that was quite exhausting but full of history, laughter and tons of photo opps.  CJ and I had a blast with our cameras!  What’s not to love about the leaning tower of Pisa, a Greek Island, Istanbul Mosques, Pompeii, the Amalfi coast, Sorrento, Ephesus with its Pergamon, the intellectual center of Aisa Minor with the greatest libraray of antiquity…  The temples of Tragan and Dionisus, the Alter of Zeus , the Asclepion ( an ancient healing center)?  That did not even count Athens with the Acropolis.  Throw in a beginning in Barcelona, an end in Venice and a first stop in Toulon, France for sunshine and a picnic with a lovely French wine, bread and cheese and one asks why are we so lucky?  It was definitely a time of indulgence.

For the first time in our European tour we were able to leave babies in a safe loving environment and really hit the pavement, so to speak.  Gloria and Liam joined us in Mykonos to feed the birds and eat Greek food.  They came along to Athens and of course spent time in Barcelona and window shopping and boat riding in Venice. But during other port stops they were given the choice of staying on board with Charlie’s Child care or touring with us.  The pull for snacks, face painting and other creative projects was a bigger draw than touring with Mom and Dad through some old churches, ruins and sights.

Double win for us!  When returning to the boat we felt invigorated and ready for pool time, a fun dinner and evening entertainment.  Every day was a fun day, even the sailing days.  We exercised, played as a family in the pool, brought our walkie talkies and played hide and seek.  All and all it was a great trip.  When asked what our favorite sights or places were it makes for a difficult answer.  I loved Greece and would go back in a minute.  I felt our time in Florence, Italy was much too short and of course one cannot do Rome in a day so I was glad we had already been there and done that, so to speak.  Istanbul was amazing but busy and I was happy to return to the Norwegian Spirit.  Our day at Pompeii and on the Amalfi coast was superb.  The people, the coast line, the food, the history- all magnificent!

So without any more chattering on I will let you take a tour through a sampling of photos.  Some were taken by Liam, Gloria or CJ and a few are my pictures too.  See if you can guess who took what photos?

Easter with ABC and at Home

Easter Time and Refelction

Easter Season has come and gone and with it’s arrival the sunshine has finally returned to this grey cold land.  Winter seems to have been unbearably long for so many this year.  We are ready for rebirth, renewal, and healthful sunshine.  We embraced winter; don’t get me wrong. We played, went skiing, sledding, drank from the fountains of hot chocolate that kept flowing in our sunless kitchen.  The cobblestone streets of sunnier places welcomed our weary, sore throats and runny noses.  Rome filled us with a sense of spring to the point that we ate gelato like it was June in the tropics!  Porto, Portugal teased us with its white Port and tonic, chilled with sliced lemons as street performers sang and strummed.  Do you sense a theme here?  SUNSHINE, we are so glad you are back. This has been the longest grey period in Germany in years.  Lucky us, we got to be here for it.  Alas,  brighter days are coming.

Before I jump to the days ahead though, I want to just take a minute to reflect on how blessed I feel.  At this time of year I have such fond memories of Easter traditions.  The Sullivans were always making a feast of lovely foods, throwing great Easter Egg hunts and my mom always had us in our Sunday best for Easter Service. It was a special time and I think back on it so fondly.  Thank you to my aunts who made those childhood memories so happy for all of us. This Easter was so fun for us as Gloria and William are at great ages.  They enjoyed a terrific Easter party at school where they decorated eggs, had an egg hunt and created numerous art projects.  When home on Easter morning, they got right to work finding their Easter baskets and discovering all the treasures.  Gloria found Liam’s and brought him right to it, saying “look Liam, look Little guy, it’s your basket.”  Then before running to find hers, she meticulously went through all of his treasures beaming with excitement over his new puppy jammies and his new camera and his chocolate bunny.  She was a true cheerleader and little mommy.

Of course hers was equally amazing, filled with yummies and treasures.  The afternoon was a happy one of lounging, skyping family, eating cinnamon rolls from scratch and just being at peace.  We wish you a peaceful, sunny spring.  Breathe in that fresh air and get outside.  We are heading there now!
